Worship
The focus of a Unitarian Universalist Church is the hour of worship each Sunday. It is here where we share with one another our celebrations and our sorrows and concerns. We share our search for understanding the viscidities of our lives. We pause from our normal routines to empty ourselves of our every-day concerns as we expand our consciousnesses to experience wonder and awe.
The many elements of a worship service serve to enhance our receptivity to our world. The many elements of worship include the physical space, meditation and poetry, music and sharing the important events of our lives with each other as well as focusing our attention on issues and concerns that affect our lives. Each of these elements affects us in different ways and contributes to the fullness of the worship experience.
The worship space establishes a peaceful setting.
Mediation relaxes us and settles us to be open to imagery and ideas and people that we may not encounter in our day-to-day lives.
Poetry moves our thoughts beyond the rigidity of rationality and opens us to imagery and visions that expand our horizons.
Music enables us to transcend the verbal mode of communication and to experience communication that is tied to our emotions as well as our thoughts.
Sharing celebrations and concerns and sorrows with one another enables us to ease each others’ burdens and experience ourselves as caring and compassionate.
Readings and sermons focus our attention on issues important in our lives in examining meanings and priorities.
